When you compare motor insurance, the sort of quotes you’ll get depends on who you are and who you ask. You can buy insurance through a broker or through direct telephone and online providers. The latter two are most suitable for relatively low-risk drivers. This is particularly true of telephone services: their speed and simplicity mean they can offer cheap rates, but only to fairly straightforward cases. Internet services offer greater choice – you can compare quotes at your leisure – but there is still no face-to-face contact. Direct insurers have nonetheless radically changed the insurance market and are a good option for many drivers looking for motor insurance.

But if you want to talk at length to someone in person and/or you think you might have some difficulty finding the right insurance, there’s the alternative of the more traditional broker. They can spend time and care discussing your particular situation with insurance companies and finding a deal tailored to you. But it’s essential to use a broker you can trust - you don’t want to be persuaded into an expensive or unsuitable policy simply because the broker gets commission. The best way to find someone reliable is to ask people you know well for recommendations and to do some research with the resources mentioned below. And when they have provided you with quotes, research again to check whether they are reasonable or not.

It’s especially important to compare motor insurance policies if you are in one of the high risk sectors. Very young drivers in particular can find themselves at a huge disadvantage, paying up to ten times more than older drivers. A new scheme being developed in the UK, pay-as-you-drive, charges young people on a monthly basis according to mileage and the time of day it was incurred. The aim is to prevent good young drivers being penalized because of less careful ones (check the Norwich Union website at www.norwich-union.co.uk or www.payasyoudrive.co.uk for more information).
As well as the online insurers/brokers themselves, there are lots of resources to help you get a good understanding of insurance quotes and the financial issues of motoring in general. Try independent consumer publications/websites such as Which? or Top Gear (based on the brilliant BBC2 series fronted by the strangely lovable ‘man’s man’ Jeremy Clarkson). The Motley Fool site (www.fool.co.uk) has a discussion board with plenty of word-of-mouth on various financial topics including insurance. There’s also the Association of British Insurers (www.abi.co.uk) and the Motor Insurer’s Information Centre (www.miic.org.uk).
